Another question I'd like to pose is this:
In regards to MORAL rights, do you think we issue them because we feel the subject needs the right, or do we issue rights to define ourselves, either as a community or as a self?

I'm not sure Wellman would argue that rights are "issued." Instead, I think he would claim that rights are justified independent of our recognition of them. It isn't a matter of us giving particular groups/all humans rights, but instead a matter of recognizing that they have those rights.
ReplyDeleteRights aren't merely a matter of need but instead what we deserve, in virtue of being human (at least, moral rights).
